NEW HAMPSHIRE 1870 CENSUS

 

PERLEY PUTNAM  Laconia, Belknap County

Perley is now a car manufacturer 39 NH, Ellen Goulding his wife 32 NY, and they have Nellie 13 NH and Lula 5 NY. He , Ellen and Nellie were here in Guilford in 1860. Can’t figure Lula out though. Perley and Ellen will be here in 1880 but alone. Lula might belong to some kinfolks of Ellen’s back in New York. He is Perley 3rd, son of Perley Putnam (2314) and Mary Cole. He was born in Franconia February 8, 1831. They were in nearby Guilford in 1860 and are here in 1880. I don’t find them in 1900, but he will die here February 19, 1901.

 

JOHN L. (LOCKE) PUTNAM  Hinsdale, Cheshire County

Still here and still a shoemaker. He is 56 NY, Phebe Towne his wife is 64 NY, Sophia 24 VT, Lucinda 22 VT. Also here is his eldest daughter Keziah Colburn 31 VT and her son Albert Colburn 9 NH. Keziah is his eldest daughter. The kids were all born back in Brattleboro, Vermont where the family was in the 1840s.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Keene, Cheshire County

He is 36  NY and still a shoemaker, Elvira Murphy, his wife, is 31 NH, Belle 8 NH and Edwin F. (Jr.) 7 NH. He is a son of John Locke Putnam who is in Hinsdale.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Sullivan, Cheshire County

He is 49 NH and works in a sawmill. Elizabeth Hale his second wife is 45 NH and Charles E. 11 NH. He is the son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Barnes. He was in Nashua in 1860 married to Lorinda French. She died August 17, 1861, and he married Elizabeth in December 1862. She died November 8, 1876, and in 1880 he is back in Nashua with a new wife, Jennie Hicks. He married Jennie Hicks in Nashua on July 9, 1877. Jennie will be his last wife, and he will die in Guilford, New Hampshire December 19, 1880.

 

HENRY E. PUTNAM  Walpole, Cheshire County

He is a grocer 41 NH, Clara P. 37 CT. Also here are Permilia Corbin 63 CT and her daughter Persis 25 CT. Permelia is Clara’s mommy (so stated in the 1880). He was born here, a son of Jacob Putnam (1690) and Lucy Brooks. They will still be here in 1900 and 1910.

 

HATTIE J. PUTNAM  Walpole, Cheshire County

She is 13 PA and lives with George W. Condey or Conley 49 NH and his wife Salina 44 VT. Harriet is a daughter of George Thayer Putnam and Rebecca Rider. They were from Vermont to New York and in Corydon, McKean County Pennsylvania in 1860. George died there and she is also listed with her mother Rebecca in Pine Grove, Warren County Pennsylvania now. Salina is Hattie’s father’s sister.

 

AMOS A. PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

Amos 3rd is now 46 NH, Nancy Robbins, his wife, 46 MA, John A. 22 NH, Nancy M. 20 NH, Addie C. 14 NH, a son Jesse R. (Jesse Lee Reno Putnam) 8 NH and George H. 6 NH.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

Another son of Amos and Rebecca. He is a farmer 48 NH, Emeline Smith, his wife, 47 NH, Charles E. 15 NH. Also here is Eliza E. Putnam 21 NH. Eliza is their daughter listed as Alice in 1850 and missing in 1860, and listed Elsa (31 NH) in 1880. They will be here in 1880.

 

JAMES P. PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

Another son of Amos 2nd. He is a farmer 39 NH, Martha Jane Whipple, his wife, is 36 NH, Amos O. 13 NH, Alice A. 9 NH, Abbie J. 8 NH, James A. 2 NH and Sarah E. 2 NH.

 

ERI PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

Also one of Amos’ kids. He is 58 NH, Persis (Rebecca Persis) 20 NH, Lyman H. (Holton) 17 NH, and Albert E. (Eri) 9 NH. Eri’s wife, Lucy Parker Holton, has died in 1864. He’ll be here in 1880 too. He had a son George Wallace age 1 in 1860 who is missing here, but will be with him in 1880.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

Edwin Lombard is number 2808, a son of Peter Putnam of Sutton, Mass. He was here since the 1850s. He is 43 MA, Emma A. 42 NH, Edwin C. and his twin Emma are 19 NH, Frank W. 16 NH, Arthur 15 NH, Fred W. and his twin Addie J. are 11 NH. Also here is a Humphrey Eaton 21 NH.

 

GEORGE B. PUTNAM  Winchester, Cheshire County

He is a bookkeeper 37 NH, Mary J. 37 NH and there is a Clarence Locke 16 NH living with them. I wonder if he is Sumner’s son from Claremont, Sullivan County. Age is right and that one is not in Sullivan County now.

 

EMILY PUTNAM  Dalton, Coos County

She is 35 NH and has her daughter Clara 7 NH with her. They live with Lewis Bowles 49 NH, a farmer. I wonder if she was married to Alonzo Putnam who was single in Lancaster in 1860. Age is right, and the two towns are only 11 miles apart. She and Clara will still be here with Lewis in 1880. Rand Putnam found a marriage record of Alonzo Putnam marrying Emily Hurlburt here, so she is Alonzo’s widow.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Lancaster, Coos County

He is now 26 VT, a truck man, Julia Ann Condon, his wife, 23 CT and young Walter 6/12 NH. He is a son of John Whipple Putnam (1146) and was here, single, in 1860. His full name is William Chandler Putnam.

 

CALEB S. (SIDNEY) PUTNAM  Canaan, Grafton County

Number 2765, and been here a long time now. He is a depot master 67 NH, Elvira Wheelock, his wife, 63 VT. The kids are all off on their own now. He will die here January 16, 1873 and Elvira will die in Manchester, NH in 1888 while living with her daughter Harriet Abbott. She’ll be there in 1880.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Canaan, Grafton County

He is 22 VT, a clerk in a dry goods store. His wife Ella is a seamstress 20 NH. They live with James H. Kelley.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Enfield, Grafton County

He is 29 NH, a huckster (peddler), Carrie E. Smith, his wife 25 NH, and young Walter 10/12 NH. Also there is Carrie’s sister Emily listed an invalid 27 NH. They will all be here in 1880 as will Carrie’s mother. He is a son of John Adams Putnam from here. His full name is Albert Romanzo. He was born here July 30, 1840 and married Carrie November 9, 1868. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

NANCY PUTNAM  Enfield, Grafton County

She is Nancy Hussey, now the widow of John Adams Putnam who died here. She is 57 NH, and lives with Howard Bucklin 30 NH and his wife Nellie 28 NH. Nellie is Nancy’s daughter Ellen. Nancy will be here in 1900, but then living with her son Wallace. She will be 87 then, and won’t die until May 9, 1906.

 

WALLACE PUTNAM  Enfield, Grafton County

Wallace John is a son of John Adams Putnam and Nancy Hussey. He is now 37 NH and works in a bedstead factory. Abbie (Abigail J. Howe), his wife, is 36 NH and they have Clarence Leroy 1 NH. They are here in 1880. Clarence was born August 18, 1868 here  in Enfield and will die December 18, 1902 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He will marry Nellie Corey there April 24, 1895.

 

ALONZO W. PUTNAM  Haverhill, Grafton County

He is now 41 NH, a lumberman, Hannah Cole, his wife, 38 NH, Susie H. 20 NH, Parker A. 18 NH, Nellie M. (Ellen) 17 NH, John 15 NH, Hiram M. 13 NH, Walter E. 11 NH, Carrie J. 9 NH, and Mary E. 7 NH. There are several boarders from Canada here. He is, of course, a son of the next listed David Putnam and Abigail Cutting. They are here in 1880.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Haverhill, Grafton County

He is now 80 NH and widowed since his wife Abigail has died.

 

WILLIE PUTNAM  Lebanon, Grafton County

He is 16 VT and works painting. He is boarding with a Sylvan Packard. Best guess is that he is the son of Amos Putnam and Amy Bragg. He is also shown back in Thetford, Orange County, Vermont. He will marry Georgia Hanson in Concord, NH in 1882. They will be in Concord in the 1900.

 

JOHN C. PUTNAM  Lisbon, Grafton County

He is now 52 NH and still working in the sawmill. Jane Weston, his wife, is 52 NH, and there is a son Milan 14 NH listed still at home. In 1860 there was a Milton age 8 and a Myron age 4. Milan would be one of those. He is a son of John Putnam and Sabrina Wiley and has been around a while now. Also here are Hosea Streeter 60 NH and his wife Diadamia 56 NH. No clue who they are.

 

GEORGE F. (FREDERICK) PUTNAM  Warren, Grafton County

He is a lawyer 28 NH and his wife Mary Rebecca Reding is 27 NH. He is a son of John and Almira Putnam from Croydon, Sullivan County as shown there in 1860. They are here in 1880, and Mary is widowed here in 1900.

 

ELIJAH PUTNAM  Amherst, Hillsborough County

Elijah jr. is now 66 and still farming, Catherine Perkins his wife is 65 NH. Also here are their daughter Caroline 42 NH and her husband J. O. Pulsifer 49 NH. There is also a Mary M. Angier 45 NH a domestic servant.

 

A. (ALBERT) M. PUTNAM  Antrim, Hillsborough County

Eleazer’s son is still here and still a machinist. He is now 41 NH, Jane Steele 44 NH, Caroline A. 12 NH, Albert M. 10 NH, George B. 7 NH. Also there is David Still 39 NH, listed as being ‘at home.’ Been here from the 1850s and they are in Lawrence, Mass. by 1880.

 

ABIEL A. (ABBOTT) PUTNAM  Brookline, Hillsborough County

He is now 68 NH and works in a cabinet shop. Also here is his son A. Abbott 25 NH who is also a cabinet maker. They were in Wilton in 1860 and earlier. They are living with the James Cook family. A couple of James Cooks kids married Abiel’s kids.

 

GEORGE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Goffstown, Hillsborough County

He is a farmer 32 NH, Abbie Hunt Partridge his wife is 23 NH, George A. (Allen) 4/12 NH. Also here is his mother Achsah Adkins Putnam 72 NH. His dad was John Putnam from Fishersfield. The family was all in Dunbarton in 1860. George will be around in 1880 in Derry, Rockingham County as will his mother.

 

LEVI G. (GILMAN) PUTNAM  Greenfield, Hillsborough County

He is 22 NH a day laborer. He is a son of Ephraim Townes Putnam and Mary Austin Shaw of Nashua. He was born there May 6, 1846 and will marry Abbie Colby May 15, 1871. They will all be here in 1880.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Hudson, Hillsborough County

See the 1860 for his story. They were here then and will be forever now. He is John Porter Putnam 56 MA, Edna Saunders, his second wife is 53 MA, Moses his son is 34 MA, and his wife Hannah Elizabeth Cross is 27 NH, Flora 5 NH and Florence 8/12 NH. Also here is a Charles Putnam 13 NH listed as ‘at home.’ Not sure who he is, wasn’t listed with this family in 1860. But, there was a Charles living with his mother Ann here in Hudson in 1860 whose age looked like 11 then. Problem is I have no idea who Ann’s husband was. Then there is a Thomas Foote 56 NH here as a farm laborer.

 

ELIAS PUTNAM  Hudson, Hillsborough County

He is 7 NY living with a John Cummings. He’ll be in Manchester in 1880.

 

WILLIAM H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Litchfield, Hillsborough County

He is a farm laborer 27 MA, Fannie Robbins his wife 22 NH and Fred H. 1 MA. He is a son of Osgood Putnam from Groton, Mass as shown at home in 1860.

 

LEVI H. (HILDRETH) PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is 28 NH a manufacturer, Lucy A. 20 NH and Nellie J. 1/12 NH. He is a son of Ephraim Hildreth Putnam and Susannah Ford. He was born in Lyndeborough. His widowed mom lives next door. He and Lucy will be in Milford, Hillsborough County in 1880. He will be widowed by 1900.

 

SUSAN PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

Susannah Ford has been widowed since the 1850s. She is now 63 NH, and lives alone.

 

BYRON PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is another son of Ephraim Hildreth Putnam. He is a farmer 30 NH, Sarah C. Carley his wife 29 NH, Eddie 13 NH and Myrtie 5 NH. He married Sarah in 1859, so the Eddie shown here is not theirs. Sarah will be here in 1880, and Byron off somewhere.

 

GEORGE A. (ALVAN) PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is a County Representative in the NH Legislature, 32 MA, Addie (Lucy Adeline Rea) 28 MA, Francis B. (Braman) 5 VT, Israel J. (Jasper) 3 NH and Mary R. (Rea) 1 NH. He is a son of Israel Putnam (1945) and Hannah Flanders of Andover, Mass. He was in the Colorado Cavalry in the Civil War and lost a leg. He married Lucy in Andover in 1864 and then moved up here. He was Town Clerk, but just got elected to the State Government. By 1873 they will be off to Kittery, Maine, probably shopping at all the outlet stores that are there now.

 

EDWIN H. PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is a farm laborer 22 MA, Eliza A. 22 NH. He is a son of Timothy Thurston Putnam and Lydia Wood. He was born in Lowell, Mass. They’ll be here in 1880, as will his dad. Right now his folks are listed in a couple more entries.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

Dave Junior is still here and is now on his fifth and final wife. He is 79 NH, Sarah Bradford 64 NH, David Jr. (actually the 3rd) 32 NH, his wife Mary Wait 28 VT and their son Alegernon W. 4 NH. David will die here in the 1870s, but everyone else will be here in 1880.

 

HANNAH PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

She is 93 NH listed as an ’aged pauper’. She is Hannah Johnson, widow of Daniel Putnam (1930) who died here in Lyndeborough in 1841. Been here ever since.

 

TIMOTHY T. (THURSTON) PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is now 52 NH, Lydia Wood, his wife, 48 NH, and Fred 9 NH. They have some laborers living here too. He is a son of Timothy Putnam and Rachel Dascomb from here. Lydia will die here January 2, 1880 and Timothy will be with his son Edwin in 1880. He will die here June 2, 1883.

 

ABIGAIL C. PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

She is 56 NH. There is also a Carkin family here, but the wife is not her daughter. She is Abigail Abbott, now widow of Israel Putnam from here in town. She’ll be here in 1880.

 

JOHN A. (ALLEN) PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is now 45 NH a farmer, Louisa Elvira Cram 43 NH, Elvira Melissa 17 NH, Philip 16 NH, Abby 15 NH, Hattie A. 13 NH and Clinton (a daughter, Clintonia Alice) 2 NH. Also here are her mother Betsy Cram 70 MA and Harriet Russell 50 NH, maybe a sister. They were here in 1860. He is a son of Philip Putnam (1869) and Mary Allen of Wilton. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Manchester W1, Hillsborough County

He is 45 NH and works in a cotton mill. He might be the guy in Canaan, Grafton County in 1860. Or, if the age is wrong, the guy in Hookset in 1860. Not sure. He lives with Richard B. Foss.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Manchester W2, Hillsborough County

He is 28 NH and works in a cotton Mill. He lives with Sarah S. Stark.

 

HATTIE PUTNAM  Manchester W2, Hillsborough County

She is 28 NH and works in a cotton mill. She boards with Munson Shaw.

 

JULIUS PUTNAM  Manchester W3, Hillsborough County

He is 18 NH and is a clerk in a store. He is boarding with Wentworth Grant. Julius Henry is a son of William Henry Putnam and Lydia Bryant of Hookset. The ‘other’ New England family.

 

HIRAM R. PUTNAM  Manchester W3, Hillsborough County

He is a blacksmith 42 MA, Lucy Ann Bryant, his wife, 38 ME, Ella M. 17 NH, Emma L. 15 MA and Louis H. 12 NH. He too is part of the Yorkshire branch of the family, a son of William Putnam and Susan Briggs. He was in Walpole Mass in 1850 and 1860, and in Canton Mass. in 1880.

 

HORACE B. (BISHOP) PUTNAM  Manchester W4, Hillsborough County

He was here in 1860, see that listing. He is now a grocer 44 MA, Rachel Hurd his wife is 43 MA, and Mary H. is 11 NH. They also have a servant Mary Berry 30 ENG.

 

ABRAM PUTNAM  Manchester W6, Hillsborough County

Also here in 1860. He s a bobbin maker 68 VT, Clarissa Greeley, his wife, 63 NH, Abram B. 24 NH (carpenter), Lucy Ann 23 NH (works in a hoop skirt shop), Joseph G. 21 NH (works in a cabinet shop), and Stephen G. 17 NH (a wood engraver). Their eldest son George is in Plaistow. Clarissa will be widowed in 1880, and be in Nashua with her brother Joseph Greeley.

 

LUCINDA PUTNAM  Mason, Hillsborough County

She is Lucinda Tarble, widow of Cyrus Putnam, and has been widowed here a while now. She is 68 NH and is boarding with Thomas Hayes.

 

GEORGE E. PUTNAM  Merrimack, Hillsborough County

He is 15 MA and a student at boarding school here. He looks to be the son of Salmon Wilder Putnam and Harriet Whitney of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He is still listed there with his brother, but is up here at school now.

 

DANIEL PUTNAM  Milford, Hillsborough County

Nathan’s son has been here since the 1840s. He is now a retired manufacturer 65 NH, Elizabeth Hale is 63 MA and Mary E. 37 MA is still at home.

 

DEBORAH PUTNAM  Milford, Hillsborough County

She is Deborah Rebecca Hill, widow of Amos Putnam. Been here all her life and will be here again in 1880. She is now 45 NH, Jennie 17 NH, Mark 15 NH and George 12 NH. Amos died here in 1859.

 

PERSIS L. PUTNAM  Milford, Hillsborough County

She is Persis Lovejoy, now widow of Eliphalet Putnam of Wilton. She is 53 NH and lives with her sister Phebe A. Lovejoy 44 NH.

 

BARNES B. (BIGALOW) PUTNAM  Nashua W1, Hillsborough County

He is now 43 NH and still a carpenter, Lucy Ann Bills, his wife, is 40 NH, James W. 20 NH (in college), Herbert H. 17 NH (paper box maker), Charles B. 15 NH, Anna M. 8 NH and Mary K. 6 NH. He is a son of Gideon Junior.

 

BARNES PUTNAM  Nashua W1, Hillsborough County

He is 65 NH, a farmer, and lives by himself. He is a son of Gideon Sr. and Sarah Barnes. He married Sarah Ellen Dean, and was here with the family in 1860. They were divorced in the mid 1860s. Sarah and the kids are listed here in Nashua. He will soon marry Frances ‘Fanny’ Brown and be here till he dies in 1889. Sarah will be in Nashua in 1880 with the daughters, but said enough is enough and she won’t remarry.

 

ABIGAIL PUTNAM  Nashua W2, Hillsborough County

She is 62 NH, and has a Lewis Brooke 18 NH with her. She is Abigail Holt and she married John Putnam of Wilton. She was without him in 1850, together in 1860 and on her own again now. The Lewis looks like her son listed as Lucius B. in 1860. She will be here in 1880 with her daughter Eliza.

 

JOHN F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Nashua W2, Hillsborough County

He has moved over from Milford, and is now a carpenter 52 NH, Ellen Frances Lanagan, his wife, 48 MA. His daughter Mary Frances is 25 NH, her husband Alonzo L. Carson is 25 NH and they have a son Harry Carson 2 NH. Also here are their sons Joseph W. 20 NH, and Arthur F. 11. Their other son, John B. is also here in Nashua and is listed shortly. John and Ellen will be in Boston (Charlestown) in 1880.

 

ESTHER PUTNAM  Nashua W3, Hillsborough County

She is 16 NY and works in a cotton mill.

 

JOHN B. (BENEDICT) PUTNAM  Nashua W3, Hillsborough County

He is a son of the above John Franklin Putnam. He is 23 NH, Rilla (Aurellia Searls) 19 NH. They were just married here December 27, 1869, and will be here with kids in 1880. Then they will be in Middlesex County, Mass. in 1900, and John will be in Concord, New Hampshire, widowed, in 1910.

 

EMMA PUTNAM  Nashua W3, Hillsborough County

She is 19 MA and a housekeeper for John F. Hobbs.

 

EVERETT S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM  Nashua W6, Hillsborough County

He is 21 NH, Mary B. 18 NH and living Mary's parents Isiah Holt 58 NH and Electa Holt 52 NH. She is Mary B. Holt and he is Samuel Everett Putnam, son of Amos Putnam and Deborah Hill from Milford. They are here in 1880 and in Cheshire County in 1900 and then back in Nashua in 1910. Mary is widowed here in 1920.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Nashua W6, Hillsborough County

Sarah Ellen Dean is 61 ME, Lizie B. 35 NH and Mariann A. 24 MA. She is the ex-wife of Barnes Putnam listed earlier. They were together in 1860 and have since divorced. Sarah and the two daughters will be here in 1880. Barnes will have married Frances Brown and will be in town as well.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Nashua W8, Hillsborough County

He is 23 (really 21) NH, a furniture makes and boarding with Henry M. Vickery. This is a dual listing for Joseph Greeley Putnam a son of Abram Putnam and Clarissa Greeley and he is also listed at home now in Manchester with his folks.

 

SAMUEL PUTNAM  New Boston, Hillsborough County

He is 62 NH and working of the Elias Dickey farm. He was here in 1840 and 1850 with his wife Mary Dustin. In 1860 she was here without him, now he is here without her. Interesting story I guess.

 

RUFUS PUTNAM  New Ipswich, Hillsborough County

He is a son of Aaron Kimball Putnam of Wilton. He is a farmer 43 NH, Mary Jane Ramsdell, his wife since 1861, is 38 NH and they have Daniel S. 6 NH.

 

EMCHILA (EMRILLA) PUTNAM  Pelham, Hillsborough County

She is 58 NH, a domestic with Jonas Keyes. She is Emerilla Keyes wife or ex-wife of Franklin Putnam. She married him here in 1841, but we haven’t seen them since then. Jonas is her dad. Franklin’s dad was Ezra Putnam (838) a son of Phineas Putnam and Mary Whipple of Danvers, Massachusetts. Ezra was in Cavendish, Vermont in 1840. She is here in Pelham with a sister in 1880 and lists herself as single, so must have divorced Franklin.

 

ELBRIDGE PUTNAM  Weare, Hillsborough County

He is now 59 NH a farmer, Hannah Edmunds, his wife, 56 NH. Also here are Betsy Cilley 74 NH and Ezra Burnham 50 NH. He has been here a long time now, and will be till he dies in 1890.

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

Been here since he was born, and is now a farmer 47 NH, Flora Hortshorn, his wife, 45 NH, Flora J. 17 NH, and Hannah A. 13 NH.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is now 66 VT, Dorcas (Putnam also) 59 NH, Emma 26 NH teaches school and George 23 NH is a ‘photographist.’ George will be married in Middleborough, Mass. in 1880, and be a photographer then as well.

 

LEVI PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

A son of Aaron Kimball Putnam. He is a wood manufacturer 51 NH, Alice Susannah Kendall 36 MA, Lizzie E. 22 NH and Levi E. 8 NH. Alice is a new wife. He was married to Harriet Stephens. He married Alice in 1868 in Dunstable, Mass.

 

SEWELL PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

She is 47 NH, her daughter Martha is 23 NH, and they live with her mother Lucy Jones 67 NH. Phebe was here with her Jones folks in 1860 and 1870. She is Phebe Jones, wife of Samuel Putnam who was a son of Eliphalet Putnam.

 

PETER H. (HAMILTON) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a manufacturer of furniture, 50 NH, Hannah Perkins Beard 57 NH, and there are Homer 27 MA, Emily 23 MA and Luke 15 NH (all named Beard) with them. The kids are Hannah’s from an earlier marriage. He is a son of Joseph Putnam (3rd) and Lucy Rumrill from here. He had first married Ruby Steele in 1846 in Lowell, Mass. She died and he then married Lavinia Lane in 1848 here in New Hampshire. They had three kids before she died in 1854. He married Hannah in 1862. He’s been here in Wilton, but this is the only census report I find him in, he’ll be here till he dies in 1897.

He was here in 1860, and is now a stone mason 37 NH, Caroline Barnes, his wife, 38 NH, Lawrence M. (Laura a daughter in 1880) 9 NH and Katie E. 6 NH.

 

GEORGE H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a teamster 23 NH, Mary Ann Gould 22 NH. Also there is her sister Cassie Gould 19 NH. They will be here in 1880. He is a son of Ephraim Townes Putnam and Mary Austin Shaw. They are in Greenfield, Hillsborough County in 1880 and in Cheshire County in 1900 and back in Greenfield by 1910.

 

AARON K. (KIMBALL) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is now 86 NH, Nancy Wright, his second wife, 64 NH. Also there is Fred A Morgan 14 NH. In 1860 his daughter Matilda was at home with a child of her marriage named Daniel Maynard age 4. The kid must be the same.

 

LUCY PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

She is 19 NH listed ‘at home’ with Hamilton Danicott. She is a daughter of Peter Hamilton Putnam and Lavinia Lane. She was with her grandparents, Joseph & Lucy Putnam, in 1860. She will be marrying a cousin, Arthur Herbert Putnam shortly.

 

ALBRO PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is listed as 24 NH and lives with Rebecca Parkhurst. He is Albro Hale Putnam, a son of Abiel Abbott Putnam and Mary Ann Radden of Wilton. He was born in Wilton April 18, 1846. He will marry Ellen Russell in Brookline, New Hampshire December 31, 1879, and be there in 1880. They will then move to Townsend, Mass. and he will die April 22, 1883.

 

ANDREW J. (JACKSON) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a farmer 42 NH, Sarah Flagg Whitney 32 MI, Willie 6 NH, Hattie 6 NH, Mabel 2 NH. Also here is A. Augustus Whitney 20 MI, a med student, and probably Sarah’s brother. He is a son of Caleb Putnam and was born here. He was at home in 1850 and probably in Michigan or thereabouts in 1860.

 

ARTEMAS PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a farmer 39 NH, Mary Kidder, his wife, 34 NH, Ida 12 MA, John 10 MA and Fred 8 MA. Don’t find him in Mass or N.H. in 1860, but he is in Weare in 1880, and in Worcester County, Mass in 1900. He is a son of Caleb Putnam from here in Wilton.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a carpenter 49 NH, Lavinia Hall 47 NH and William 23 NH. He is a son of Aaron Kimball Putnam.

 

CLARA PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

She is 22 NH and works in a woolen mill. Looks like another granddaughter of Joseph and Lucy Putnam from Milford as shown in 1860. She is a daughter of Peter Hamilton Putnam and his first wife Lavinia Lane. She will marry Henry Shattuck soon. Her sister Lucy was listed earlier here in Wilton.

 

WARREN P. (PRESCOTT) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 25 NH and an apprentice blacksmith working with Harris Abbott. He is a son of Sewell and Hannah Putnam from here in Wilton. He will marry Helen Merritt in 1874 and be here with her in 1880 and 1900.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Concord W1, Merrimack County

He is 48 NH, an English teacher, Sallie R. Brown 48, Lizzie (Mary Elizabeth) 14 NH, Emma F. 13 NH and D. (David) Herbert 6 NH. Also here is Nancy A. Brown 44 NH who is Sarah’s sister. David is a son of Timothy Putnam (1935) and his first wife Rachel Dascomb of Lyndeborough. Sally will be widowed here in 1880 and still in 1900.

 

HIRAM PUTNAM  Concord W1, Merrimack County

He is a blacksmith 37 MA and boarding with Ira Simmons. Best bet is that the age is wrong. See the 1860 listing for Hiram in Walpole, Norfolk County, Mass. That Hiram was a blacksmith and came here a lot while his father William was alive in nearby Hookset. That Hiram is currently also listed now in Manchester, NH in 1870. He is also boarding away from his family in 1880 in Canton, Mass.

 

WILLIAM T. (TARBLE) PUTNAM  Concord W5, Merrimack County

He is a gas pipe fitter 41 NH, and boarding with William Mason. He was here in 1860 and was then married to a Nancy E. Morse. He will be in Boston in 1880. He is a son of Cyrus Putnam and Lucinda Tarble from Mason, Hillsborough County.

 

HANNAH PUTNAM  Concord W6, Merrimack County

Hannah Whitten is the widow of Nehemiah Putnam. They were all here in 1860. She is now 65 NH, her daughter Maria 40 NH (should be ME).

 

ISABELL PUTNAM  Concord W7, Merrimack County

She is a cook 28 NH (ME) living with Robert Hill. She was alone here in 1860 working for a physician then.

 

WILLIAM H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimac County

One of the ‘other’ Putnams. He is now 47 MA a farmer, Lydia J. Bryant 41 ME, and Alice 15 NH. See the 1860 for his info.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimac County

James is a son of Joseph Putnam (1870) and Rebecca Burton of Wilton. He was here in 1860. He was a blacksmith, now has kinda retired to being a farmer. He is now 73 NH, Betsy (Elizabeth Saltmarsh) is 70 NH. Also here are his son James F. (Franklin) 40 NH, his wife Annie Perkins 42 NH, and kids Sarah F. 17 NH and Lewis F. 15 NH. James junior was at home here in 1850, and then ‘overlooked’ in the 1860 census. He married Annie here December 1, 1852. He is a watchman in the Mills here.

 

RUFUS PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

Rufus junior has been widowed here since the 1850s, but has remarried. He is now a farmer 56 NH, Lydia C. Goss 39 NH, Joseph 26 NH, William 25 NH and a new son Charles 6 NH. Rufus married Lydia here December 19, 1860.

 

GEORGE A. (ABBOTT) PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

He is 17 MA, a domestic with Daniel Dow. He is a son Ephraim Abbott Putnam and Ruth Louise Burnham of Reading, Massachusetts. He was home there in 1860. Ephraim is a son of John Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick of Wilton, New Hampshire.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

He was single here in 1860. He is now a farmer 30 NH, Almira Eastman 30 NH, George M. 6 NH and Grace E. 1 NH. He married Almira here March 19, 1862. According to the notes in Eben’s files, his father (name not given, but probably Martin) was a son of Rufus and Betsy Putnam from here.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

James Martin is a son of Martin Putnam who died here in the 1840s. He was single here in 1860, but married Sarah Clark Davis in 1861. He is now a farmer 33 NH, Sarah C. 35 NH, and Clara 4 NH. They all are in Peabody, Mass. in 1900 and in Andover, Mass. by 1920.

 

RUFUS A. (AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Pembroke, Merrimack County

Been here forever. In 1860 he said he was retired, but now lists himself at his old occupation of being a Congregational Minister. He is 78 MA, Frances H. Porter, his wife, 74 MA. Also here are his son Samuel Porter Putnam also a Congregational Minister 34 NH, his wife Louisa Howell 22 CT (really NY) and their son Harry H. 2 IL.

 

AUGUSTUS R. (RANDALL) PUTNAM  Warner, Merrimack County

He is a station agent for the railroad, 34 NH, Eliza Rand 33 NH and George A. 8 NH. He is a son of Herrick Putnam and Rachel Keyser. His mom lives next door. He was a teacher, and married Eliza in Hopkinton on August 29, 1861.

 

RACHEL E. PUTNAM  Warner, Merrimack County

Rachel Keyser 66 NH is the widow of Herrick Putnam. They were in Hopkinton in 1860.

 

ADDISON PUTNAM  Wilmot, Merrimack County

He is a farmer 36 NH, Mary Sargent Cheney his wife 27 NH and Nellie 3 NH. Also here are his folks Benjamin Putnam 80 NH and Sally Tenney Putnam 76 NH. He will be in Placer County, California by 1880, and back here in 1900.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Derry, Rockingham County

He is 34 VT, Mahala F. 27 ME, Louis J. 8 MA and Alonzo 5 MA. Best I can figure is that he is a son of Alonzo Putnam and Eliza Parmeter as shown in 1850 in Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont. In 1860 Eliza and the kids are in Lowell, Massachusetts, and Alonzo is still up in NH. As to John and Mahala. They must have gone down to Lowell, Mass in the 70s and he died there or something. In 1880 Mahala has remarried to John Hales, and is there with the kids. In1900 Mahala has moved to Newark, New Jersey and is still married to John Hales. She has her sons Alonzo and Lewis with her then as well. By 1900 and through 1920 Alonzo is back in Lowell, Mass., and Lewis still in Newark.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Hampstead, Rockingham County

Thorndike’s son is now 53 NH. His first wife Meribah Ayers has died and his new wife Sarah Ann is 42 NH, his son Oliver is now 26 NH. Also there is his mother, Mary Chase Putnam 80 NH.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  Londonderry, Rockingham County

He is 49 CND, a farm laborer boarding with Martha Merrill. According to the VR here, his folks were Francis and Josette Putnam. He will marry Betsy Bancroft, and then she will marry George Chrispeen in 1875. So he probably died here in the early 1870s.

 

GEORGE T. PUTNAM  Plaistow, Rockingham County

He is a son of Abram Putnam and Clarissa Greeley. He was born November 22, 1840 in Wilton, New Hampshire. He was with his folks in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1850 and in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1860. He served in the 15th and 16th Massachusetts Regiments during the Civil War. He is a shoemaker 29 NH, Laura Sophia Carleton, his wife, his wife 26 NH. They are living with her folks Hiram and Abigail Carleton. They were married here February 6, 1866. They are still here with her folks in 1880 and he will die here in 1881. Laura will be here widowed in 1900.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  Portsmouth, Rockingham County

He is 28 ME, and is a paymaster at a Naval factory. He is boarding with James J. Pierce. He is actually Edwin Putnam a son of Israel Putnam and Sarah Emery Frost of Bath, Maine. He is also listed there at home right now. He will be here in 1880 and be married to Annie M. Salter.

 

GEORGE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Farmington, Strafford County

He is 33 NH and works in a shoe factory, Mary Ann Waldron 26 NH, Ralph W. 5 NH, and an un-named child (Herbert F.) 3/12 NH. Then there several boarders Henry Hayes 28 NH, Albert E. Putman 24 NH (MA) and Julia Lanyon 28 NH. Albert is George’s brother. They are sons of Orrin Putnam and Sally Nourse from Danvers, Mass. They were home there in 1860. Mary and the kids will be here in 1880. They are all in Lynn, Mass. by 1900 and are there through 1920. His brother Albert will be married here in 1880.

 

JANE PUTNAM  Rollingsford, Strafford County

She is 25 VT and works in a cotton mill. She is boarding with Lydia Andrews.

 

ADELINE M. PUTNAM  Acworth, Sullivan County

She is 35 NH, Jennie N. 12 NH and Arthur O. 10 NH. She is Adaline Melissa Reed, the widow of Henry Dinsmore Putnam. Henry was number 2610, son of Oliver Putnam (1166) and Catherine Dinsmore of Charlestown. Henry died during the Civil War on August 29, 1863 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

LIZZIE L. PUTNAM  Acworth, Sullivan County

She is 12 NH and lives with Ambrose (57 ME) and Margaret (41 ENG) Piper. She is a daughter of Orson Dean Putnam and Mary Margaret Easter. Her dad died in 1864 in the Civil War, and her mother married Ambrose.

 

JOHN P. PUTNAM  Acworth, Sullivan County

He is 30 and listed as being born in Italy. He later states he immigrated in 1861 and his parents were Italian. No idea what his original name was. His wife Ellen A. White is 28 NH, Willie E. 1 NH and Mary E. 4/12 NH. They are in Claremont in 1880. He is widowed there in 1900 and has a new wife by 1910.

 

WILLARD B. (BENJAMIN) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 48 NH, Ann B. Hamilton his second wife 40 NH, Mary L. 7 NH, Walter (Willard A.) 6 NH, Marcia W. 4 NH, Eddie (Edwin J.) 2 NH and Lucy N. 1 NH. He will die here in 1881. He is number 1138 and was born in Unity, NH September 17, 1821. He married Mary Rounsvel in Charlestown on February 1, 1849. She died around 1852, and he married Ann Hamlin or Hamilton on October 10, 1854.

 

MOSES PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is now 83 NH and still farming. His second wife (Mrs.) Esther Twitchel is 65 NH. His first wife, Amanda Holden, died in 1862. He married Esther April 18, 1867. He will die here February 9, 1872. He is number 1164. In 1880, Esther will be in Spartanburg South Carolina living with her daughter from her first marriage Martha (Twitchell) and her husband Jesse Cobb also from here in Charlestown.

 

VALERIA PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is Valeria Seaver, widow of John Putnam (1165) who died here September 3, 1865. She is now 65 NH and will die here herself on July 31, 1871.

 

GEORGE W. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 14 NH and lives with Sanford Winter. He is a son of John Putnam and Rebecca Winter. He is living with his grandparents. He was with them in Cheshire County in 1860. His folks died very shortly after he was born.

 

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 28 VT a farm laborer, Nancy Clementine Dutton 30 VT, Sardiner 7 VT and Henry 3 VT. He is Benjamin Franklin Putnam (2616) a son of Joseph Putnam (1167) of Springfield, Windham County, Vermont. The family was originally from here in Charlestown.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is William Dinsmore Putnam (2610), and they were in Acworth in 1860. He is 35 (actually 33) NH a farmer, Elmira Sartwell 35 MA, Frank S. 14 NH, Emma 5 NH, William 3 NH and Ada 10/12 NH.

 

CATHERINE PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is Catherine Dinsmore, widow now of Oliver Putnam (1166). She is 64 NH, her daughter Lucy 19 NH. They live with Mary Dinsmore 70 NH and Elizabeth Renkes 58 NH. Both probably sisters.

 

FRANKLIN PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 37 NH, Rosette Mary Putnam 35 NH and Gusta R. Augusta Rosette) 6/12 NH. He is number 2558, son of Nathan Putnam (1148). Rosette is number 2605, daughter of John Putnam (1165). He is a representative to the General Court and will be a selectman here.

 

EPHRAIM PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He (number 1145) is now 75 NH, his wife Prudence Graves is 80 NH.

 

NANCY PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is Nancy Melville, ex wife of Elisha D. Putnam (1150). She is now 72 NH, and was sorta single here in 1860. Elisha has now died in 1864, so she is a widow of sorts.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is number 2614 a daughter of Oliver Putnam and Catherine Dinsmore. She is 21 NH and lives with Judge T. Dinsmore.

 

WESLEY D. (DANIEL) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is number 2607, a son of John Putnam (1165) and Valeria Seaver. He is 29 NH and works in a sawmill, Mary Jane Parks, his wife, is 28 NH and they have Isabel (Mary Belle) 5 NH. He married Mary Jane 16 Nov. 1863. He’ll be a salesman soon, travel the Northeast and end up in Boston in the late 1880s. Mary Jane has been a schoolteacher and will become a physician when they are in Boston and will Practice there and after Wes dies in 1903, she will practice and teach medicine in Los Angles until she is into her 90s.

 

EDMUND H. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is number 2599, son of Moses Putnam number 1164. He is a farmer 42 NH, Elizabeth H. Tutherly 41 NH and Lizzie M. (Mary Elizabeth) 14 NH.

 

LAURA PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is 11 WASH.DC, a servant with David Damah or something. She is a daughter of George Melville Putnam (2563) and Mary Ann Parker. They were in Washington in the 1850s and early 60s. He was a son of Elisha Putnam (1150) and was from here in Charlestown. Laura was born November 19, 1856. Her folks moved to Glen Falls, NY where he died in 1864. She will be here through the 1920, still unmarried.

 

JAMES S. (SOUTHARD) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 2594, a son of Samuel Putnam (1159) and Eliza Southard. In fact his dad is here with him. He is a farmer 51 NH, Susan R. Dinsmore, his wife, is 43 NH, Susan M. 13 NH, Carlie E. 11 NH, Fred S. 6 NH, and his father Samuel 85 NH.

 

SAMUEL PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is number 2593, a son of Samuel Putnam (1159) and Eliza Southard. He was born here May 24, 1817. He is a farmer 53 NH, Annette Minard his wife 31 NH, Wesley (Samuel Wesley) 8 NH, Southard A. (Aaron Southard) 6 NH and Alice 4 NH. They, and a new son John, will be here in 1880.

She is 17 NY, a domestic servant with Horace Hubbard.

 

GROSVENOR (JOHN GROSVENOR) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 30 NH, Eliza N. 25 NH and John G. (3rd) 7 NH. He is a son of John Grosvenor Putnam (2747) and Lydia Kelley from Claremont. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

PRESCOTT H. PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is another son of John Grosvenor Putnam (2747) and Lydia Kelley. He is a farmer 28 NH, Emma 21 NH and Alton 1 NH. There is also a John Reardon 10 NH, and a worker from Ireland.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is a carpenter 44 NH, Luthera Andrews his wife 43 NH. He is a son of Israel Putnam number 1773. He’ll be here until the 1890s. He’ll be widowed by 1900 and be back in Milford New Hampshire where he was born and be there in 1910 too at age 84.

She is a seamstress 40 NH and boarding with Merrill Willey. She is Abigail Willey, ex-wife of Dexter Buckley Putnam. They were in Croydon in 1860. He’s still there but married to Mary Beckworth. Her daughter Emily L. 17 NH lives next door and is also boarding. Her daughter Edith is also listed shortly.

She is Laura Augusta Cook, the widow of Hiram Putnam (1372) who died here in 1857. She is 57 NH, her daughter Mary is 20 NH.

She is 6 NH and lives with John Soverin. She is a daughter of Caleb Putnam and Joanna Badger. Her mom died here in 1868. Her now widowed dad is still here in town. Her brother Hiram is in Vermont now.

He is number 1235, David’s son. He is now 72 NH. His wife Almira French had died in 1862. He has married Mary Colby. She is 57 NH. Both will die here in the mid and late 1880s.

He is number 2788, son of Hiram number 1244. He is now widowed and is 53 NH, a farmer. He married Joanna Badger here December 16, 1862, and she died here October 17, 1868. He will be here still widowed in 1880, and die here in 1881.

 

STILLMAN PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is number 2798, a son of Peter Putnam (1245) of Croydon. He is a farmer 34 NH, his wife Carolyn Cooper is 28 NH and they have Freidel, a son, 10 NH. Also there is a Katie Cooper 2 NH. She is kin of sorts.

Number 1245, Caleb’s son. He is now 75 NH, Martha Winter, his wife, 71 NH and their son Otis is 32 NH. Otis will marry Lucy Russell and be here in 1880 and onwards.

Charles Prescott is number 2749, son of Solomon number 1228. He is 56 NH. Thankful Ryder, his second wife is 38 NH, Eliza 18 NH, Etta 16 NH, Edward 8 NH and Ervin 6 NH. His first wife Esther Hilliard died in 1865, and he married Thankful in 1868. She will be widowed here in 1900.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is number 2791, a son of Hiram (1244). He is now 45 NH, his wife Matilda Carroll 40 NH, George 19 NH, Frank 18 NH, Fred 15 NH, Edward 13 NH, Matilda J. 10 NH and Nellie 1 NH. This is the line of Ed Putnam who has done and is doing so much genealogy work on all the various Putnams and Putmans.

He number 2608, a son of Oliver Putnam (1166) and Catherine Dinsmore from Charlestown. He is 39 NH, Sarah C. Graves 37 NH, Catherine A. 3 NH and Oliver A. 11/12 NH. Her mother Polly C. Graves 72 NH is living with them.

 

DEXTER PUTNAM  Lempster, Sullivan County

He is number 2750, son of Solomon number 1228. He is 54 NH, and looks to have divorced his wife Abigail Willey. His new wife, Mary Beckwith, is 48 NH, Edith 21 NH, Elwin (Elmore) 19 NH, Emma 17 NH and George 15 NH. He will be around in 1880, and then die in 1885. Mary will die here in 1890. His first wife Abigail will be around in 1900 though.

He is 19 NH NH NH, and lives with William and Rebecca Wadleigh. He works at a sawmill. There are 4 possibles in 1870, so won’t venture a guess.

He is a car manufacturer 49 NH ENG ENG, Ellen Goulding 41 NY NY NY. He is Perley 3rd, son of Perley Putnam (2314) and Mary Cole. He was born in Franconia February 8, 1831. He will die there February 19, 1901. He was here with Ellen in 1860 and 1870.

She is 19 VT VT VT and works in a woolen Mill. She was living with Merrick Putnam and Abigail Holden of Wardsboro, Windham County, VT in 1870, but I think she belonged to his brother Daniel who had died in the 1860s.

John Locke Putnam’s son is still here. He is now 49 NY NY NY, Elvira Murphy his wife 40 NH MA VT, Belle 18 NH, and Edwin F. Jr. 17 NH. They are gone by 1900.

He is now 51 NH MA NH, Clara P. Corbin is 48 CT CT CT. Her mother Permelia or Pamela Corbin 76 CT CT CT, and sister Persis Corbin 35 CT are with them as they were in 1870. He was born here, a son of Jacob Putnam (1690) and Lucy Brooks. They will still be here in 1900.

A son of Amos and Rebecca, and is now 59 NH MA MA, Emmeline Smith is 57 NH MA MA, Elsa 31 NH his daughter. Also here are Bertie Willard 6 NH NH NH and William Litchfield 73 CT CT CT. No connection is indicated but Bert probably belongs to one of his daughters.

She is still living with Lewis Bolles as they were in 1870. She is listed widowed and 44 NH NH NH, Clara 17 NH NH NH. She is Emily Hurlburt, widow of Alonzo Putnam. Alonzo died in the 1860s, she will die here in Dalton July 22, 1894.

He is 35 VT VT VT and is living with his wife Julia Ann Congdon 34 CT CT CT and son Walter E. 10 NH. He is a teamster, and a son of John W. Putnam (1146) and his second wife Ellen Horne. He was born just across the Connecticut River in Lunenburg, Essex County, Vermont May 24, 1844. All three are here again in 1900.

He is 36 MA MA MA and boarding. He works in a pail factory.

 

EUDORA PUTNAM  Bristol, Grafton County

She is widowed 38 MA NH NH, a housekeeper for Orrin and Sarah Ray. Believe it or not, we know who this gal is. Ed Putnam found this in a History of Bristol. Eudora Ray was born in Lowell, Mass. She moved, I guess with her folks, to Minneapolis, Minnesota. There she married Israel Putnam, a son of Elisha Porter Putnam of Essex, New York. Israel has died recently and she is back here with kinfolk. Next she will return to Minnesota and marry Israel’s brother, William Henry Putnam, in the Fall of 1881. They will live in Le Sueur, Minnesota. He will die at some stage, and she will return here to Bristol, and die here February 14, 1895. Nice tracking job here by Ed.

 

ALBERT R. (ROMANZO) PUTNAM  Enfield, Grafton County

He is 39 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Carrie E. Smith 30 NH NH VT, son Walter A. 10 NH. Also there are her mother and sister, Emeline C. Smith 78 VT and Emily C. Smith 38 NH. He is a son of John Adams Putnam from Hanover and Enfield in Grafton County. He was shown at home there in 1860, and was here married in 1870. He will be in Medford, Mass. in 1900 through 1920 with a new wife Josephine Hedrick who he will marry in Boston on July 3, 1887. The son Walter was born August 27, 1869 and will marry Beulah Ardelle Cate in Meredith June 30, 1895. They are in Medford, Mass. in 1900 and then Brookline by 1910 and Belmont, Mass in 1920

 

WALLACE PUTNAM  Enfield, Grafton County

He is a farmer 48 NH NH NH, his son Clarence is 12 NH, and his wife Abbie Howe has died in the past 10 years. They were married January 1, 1862 in Lebanon. His mother Nancy 68 NH NH NH is here with him. Wallace John is a son of John Adams Putnam and Nancy Hussey. He was born June 4, 1832 and will die in Enfield March 24, 1910.

 

ALONZO W. PUTNAM  Haverhill, Grafton County

He is a farmer and is 52 NH NH NH, Hannah Cole his wife is 46 NH NH NH, John 27 NH, Carrie 19 and Lizzie M. 16 NH. There are a couple of farm laborers living here. He is a son of David Putnam and Abigail Cutting from here. Hannah will be widowed here in 1900 living with her married daughter.

 

GEORGE F. (FREDERICK) PUTNAM  Haverhill, Grafton County

He is 38 NH NH NH, Mary Rebecca Reding 37 NH NH NH. Also here is Ann M. Felton 71 NH NH NH listed as ‘other’. He is a son of John and Almira Putnam from Croydon, Sullivan County. He was home in 1860, here in 1870 and only Mary will be around in 1900.

He is 62 NH NH NH and works in a bobbin Mill and lives in company housing. He is also listed at home in Lisbon where he was in past years.

Still here and is now 62 NH NH NH, Jane Weston, his wife, 61 NH NH NH. Kids are gone now. He is a son of John Putnam and Sabrina Wiley. He’ll be here in 1900 and be listed as an inmate at the Grafton County Farm.

He is 27 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Ida M. Henry 25 NH NH VT, and son George H. 3 NH. He is a son of Alonzo M. Putnam and Hannah Cole. He was born in Haverhill, Grafton County. They are in Traverse County Minnesota in 1885 and 1900. The son George shows up back here in Hillsborough County in 1900 though.

He is now 76 MA NH NH, Catherine Perkins his wife is 74 NH NH NH. Also here are his daughter Caroline F. 51 NH and her husband Jeremiah O. Pulsifer 58 NH. They have been in Wilton up till now.

 

MARK PUTNAM  Amherst, Hillsborough County

He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Barnes. He was born in Nottingham, Rockingham County December 10, 1818. He married Mary Twiss in Milford, Hillsborough County on December 10, 1839. In 1850, the family was in West Springfield, Massachusetts. He worked in cotton mills for some 40 years. In 1870, the family was in Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island. He was working in the cotton mill there. In 1872, they returned to Amherst, New Hampshire and he will be here until he dies. He is currently a farmer 61 NH NH NH, Mary W. Twiss 60 NH, George W. 23 NH (a school teacher). There is a grandson George Bennett 13 NH with them. Also Mary’s mother Mary Twiss 90 NH is with them.

 

ABIEL A. (ABBOTT) PUTNAM  Brookline, Hillsborough County

He is 78 NH NH NH and is widowed as he was in 1870, and living with his daughter Josephine Cook 41 NH and her husband Orange Scott Cook 44 MA and their kids. Abiel is from Wilton, NH. Two of his kids married Cook folks.

 

HENRY E. (ELIPHALET) PUTNAM  Brookline, Hillsborough County

He is 43 NH and is living with his wife Mary Eliza Cook 40 MA, daughters Grace C. 12 MA, Ada 8 MA and father in law James D. Cook 71 MA. He is a son of Abiel Abbot Putnam and Mary Ann Radden, and was born in Wilton. He married Mary Eliza in Reading, Mass. on November 2, 1863. He was there in Reading in 1860 and 1870. They are in Middlesex County, Mass. in 1900 and he is widowed in Lynn, Mass. in 1910 with his daughters.

 

ALBRO H. (HALE) PUTNAM  Brookline, Hillsborough County

He is 34 NH NH MA Ellen Jane Russell is 20 MA MA MA. He is a son of Abiel Abbott Putnam and Mary Ann Radden of Wilton and now here. He was born in Wilton April 18, 1846, and married Ellen J. Russell on December 31, 1879. They will move to Townsend, Mass. and he will die April 22, 1883. He is a furniture maker and Townsend was a very big furniture center along with Gardner, Mass. He died in Gainesville, Florida, probably down there on business. Ellen was born September 26, 1859 in Townsend. After Albro dies, she will marry Jeremiah Tourjee in 1884.

 

LEVI G. (GILMAN) PUTMAN  Francestown, Hillsborough County

He is 34 NH and is living with his wife Abby Louisa Colby 33 NH, children Frank G. (Gilman) 8 NH, Emma E. 5 NH, George W. (Warren) 3 NH and Willie 11/12 NY and his mother in law Mary Colby 77 MA. He is a son of Ephraim Townes Putnam and Mary Austin Shaw of Nashua. He was born there May 6, 1846 and married Abbie May 15, 1871 in Lyndeborough.

He is 75 NH NH NH and lives with his daughter Laura A. Tirrill 44 NH, her husband Joseph Tirrill 43 NH and their kids. His wife Hannah Glidden died back in Wilton in the 1860s. He was alone there in 1870 and has moved over here since then. He is a son of Eliphalet and Dorcas Putnam from Wilton.

He is 35 NH NH NY, and is living with his wife Mary A. Gould 31 NH NH NH, son George W. 1 NH and sister-in-law Ella C. Gould 28 NH. He is a son of Ephraim Townes Putnam and Mary Austin Shaw of Nashua. He was born in Nashua December 29, 1844. He is a Saloon keeper.

He is a farm laborer, 45 NH NH NH. He is a son of Cyrus Putnam and Lucinda Tarble. He was born April 28, 1834 in Wilton. He was working on a farm there in 1850 and another one in 1860, in Leominster, Mass. in 1870 still single, and now here. He’ll be here in 1900 and in Nashua by 1910, still single.

 

JOHN P. (PORTER) PUTNAM  Hudson, Hillsborough County

He is 66 MA MA MA and is living with his wife Edna H. Saunders 63 MA MA NH, daughter Edna S. Berry 37 MA and her children Sarah E. 12 NH, Herbert M. 7 NH, Ethel D. 1 VT, Flora E. 15 NH and Florence E. 10 NH. He is number 1478, a son of Porter Putnam (590) and Sarah Tapley of Danvers, Massachusetts.

He is 23 MA MA MA, a laborer on Alonzo Hill’s farm. He is a son of the above John Porter Putnam and Edna Saunders. He’s out of the state or someplace by 1900.

 

W. H. (WILLIAM HENRY) PUTNAM  Litchfield, Hillsborough County

He is 37 MA MA NH, and is living with his wife Mary Frances ‘Fanny’ Robbins 31 NH NH NH, and children Frederick H. 11 MA, William E. (Elbert) 9 NH, Annie E. 7 NH and Catherine 4 NH. He is a son of Osgood Putnam (2122) and Rhoda Hall of Groton, Massachusetts. Came up here about 1869 in time to be in the 1870 here.

 

ABIGAIL C. PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

She is 66 NH and is living with her daughter Ruth L. McGinley 30 NH and granddaughter Abbie McGinley 7 NH. She is Abigail C. Abbott, the widow of Israel Putnam of Lyndeborough. She was widowed back in 1870. She was also married to James Marshall before Israel, so has been twice widowed now.

He’s actually David 3rd, and is 42 NH NH NH, Marriett D. (Mary Wait his wife) 38 VT VT VT, Algernon W. 14 NH, Erwin D. 7/12 NH. Also here is his stepmother Sarah Bradford Putnam 74 NH. He was living with his dad David and Sarah here in 1870.

 

EDWIN H. PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is 31 MA NH MA and is living with his wife Eliza Ann Keyes 31 NH MA MA, children Roy N. 9 NH, Lydia W. 6 NH, Charles E. 4 NH, Percy W. 1 NH, his father Timothy T. 62 NH and uncle William W. Wood 44 NH.  He is a son of Timothy Thurston Putnam and Lydia Wood. He was born in Lowell, Mass when his father had gone there to work and to marry Lydia. They were there in 1850, back here in Lyndeborough in 1860. Edwin was married here in Lyndeborough in 1870. They are here again in 1900. His mother Lydia died here January 2, 1880 and Timothy will die here June 2, 1883.

She is 26 MA NH NH and lives with her aunt Elizabeth Wallace 56 NH and her daughter Charlotte 26 NH. She is a daughter of Hiram Putnam and Lucy Bryant of Manchester. The ‘other’ Putnam family.

 

JOHN A. (ALLEN) PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

He is now 66 NH NH MA, Louisa Elvira Cram 53 NH NH MA, Philip 26 NH, and Clintie A. (a daughter, Clintonia Alice) 12 NH. He’ll die here in 1888. He’s a son of Philip Putnam and Mary Allen of Wilton. Louisa is widowed here through 1910 when she is 83.

 

SARAH C. PUTNAM  Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County

Sarah Carley is the wife of Byron Putnam. She is 39 NH NH NH, her daughter Myrtle M. 15 NH NH NH. Also here is Remi Belanzer 48 CAN. They were here in 1870, and he’s around someplace. She will die October 21, 1893. Byron will marry an Emily in 1895 and they will be here in 1900.

He is 17 NY and is in a hotel of sorts. He was living with a Cummings family in Hudson in 1870. No clue as to folks.

 

ELVIRA PUTNAM  Manchester, Hillsborough County

She is 73 VT and lives with Charles and Hattie Abbott. She is Elvira Wheelock, widow of Caleb Sidney Putnam of Canaan, Grafton County. They were there in 1870, and after he died in 1873 she moved over here. Hattie S. 32 NH is her daughter though not listed as such in the census. Elvira will be here till she dies in 1888.

He is 23 NH NH NH and working on a farm. He is a son of Dexter Buckley And Abigail Willey from Croydon. He will be married and back in Sullivan County in 1900.

He is 30 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Georgia 29 CAN MA VT, and daughters Flora M. 5 NH and Nellie E. 3 NH. He is a son of Samuel Putnam and Mary Dustin. He was born in New Boston, Hillsborough County, and at home with his mom there in 1860.

He is 53 MA MA CT, Rachel Hurd 49 MA, Mary H. 21 MA. He is a County Commissioner. Used to be a grocer, got into politics it seems. Rachel will be widowed here in 1900.

 

JAMES F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Manchester, Hillsborough County

He is a watchman at a cotton mill 50 NH NH NH, his wife Annie Perkins 52 CAN NH NH, Sadie F. 27 NH and Louis F. 25 NH. Up till now they have been living with his folks James Putnam and Betsy Saltmarsh in Hookset. He was a watchman then, maybe just moved closer to work.

 

JULIUS H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Manchester, Hillsborough County

He is 28 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Susan M. Lullibridge 22 CAN CT CT (probably all are CAN), and son Leon H. 9 NH. He is a son of William Henry Putnam and Lydia Jane Bryant of Hookset, Merrimack County. Remember, this family is the line out of Hartford from Yorkshire England, not the line of the Salem family. They are in nearby Bedford in 1900 through the 1920.

They moved over from Lyndeborough recently. He is now 38 NH NH NY, Lydia I. 29 NH and Nellie J. 9 NH. He is a son of Ephraim Hildreth and Susannah Putnam. In 1870 they were in Lyndeborough where he was born. Nellie had just been born.

Persis Lovejoy is the widow of Eliphalet Putnam, and was in 1870. She is now 63 NH NH NH. Her sister Phebe Lovejoy is 54 NH and living here as she was in 1870.They will be together here in 1900.

She is 72 NH NH MA, her daughter Eliza 31 NH NH NH. She is Abigail Holt and she married John Putnam of Wilton. She was without him in 1850, together in 1860 and on her own again here in 1870. She is listed a widow, so John died sometime in the 1860s.

Gideon’s son is still hanging in and is 75 NH NH NH, Fanny Brown 59 NH NH MA. Also here are her two spinster sisters Harriet Brown 51 NH and Clara Brown 53 NH. Barnes was divorced by Sarah Ellen Dean in the 1860s and was single here in 1870. He recently married Frances Brown and will be here till he dies in 1889. Fanny and both of her sisters are here in 1900 though.

His wife Sarah Ayers is still there in Schuyler Falls. He lists himself as single, she says she’s married. He will be married again soon to Nancy Barber and die in 1887.

He is 53 VT VT VT and is living with his wife Olive Wright 56 VT ME NH, children Hattie S. 29 VT, Arthur W. 21 VT. He is a son of Joseph Putnam and Irene Holdridge and was born in Fairlee, Orange County, Vermont. He was at home there in 1850 and 1860, and in Thetbridge, Orange County in 1870. He will be back in Thetbridge with Hattie in 1900. Olive will have died by then. The son Arthur will be in Belknap County, New Hampshire in 1900 and 1920.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Nashua, Hillsborough County

He is 59 NH NH NH, Jenny Hicks 49 NB ENG ENG. He runs a boarding house. He is the son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Barnes, but he has a different wife every decade. He married Lorinda French in the 1850s and she died in 1861. He married Elizabeth Hale in 1862 and she died November 8, 1876. He married Jennie Hicks in Nashua on July 9, 1877. Jennie will be his last wife, and he will die in Guilford, New Hampshire December 19, 1880.

 

JOHN B. (BENEDICT) PUTNAM  Nashua, Hillsborough County

He is 34 MA NH MA and is living with his wife Rilla (Aurellia Searls of Pelham, New Hampshire) 29 NH, Walter A. 9 NH, Anna F. 8 NH and Arthur C. 5 NY (probably should read NH). He was born in Boston April 23, 1846, and married Aurellia December 27, 1869 here in New Hampshire. He is a son of John Franklin Putnam (# 2030). The line goes back John B. > John F. > Stephen > Moses > Stephen > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. They are in Wayland, Mass. in 1900.

 

MARK PUTNAM  Nashua, Hillsborough County

He is 25 NH NH NH, a cabinet maker. He is boarding. He is a son of Amos Putnam and Deborah Hill of Milford. He has been at home with his widowed mom up till now. He married Nellie Heath here November 18, 1875, and she must have died or something. He’ll be married to Elizabeth Pond here in 1900.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Nashua, Hillsborough County

Sarah Dean is now 69 ME ME ME, Lizzie B. 46 NH, and Mariann A. 34 MA. They work in a cotton mill. Sarah was divorced from her husband Barnes Putnam from here in the 1860s.

 

WILLIAM J. PUTNAM  Nashua, Hillsborough County

He is 39 NH VT NH and is living with his wife Dora Tarbell 28 NH, daughter Dora A. 2 NH, sister in law Harriet Putnam 40 MA and her son Elden 14 MA. He is a son of Amos and Dorcas Putnam of Wilton. Harriet is Harriet Parker, wife of Samuel Abbott Putnam. They were in Townsend, Mass in 1870. Sam was this William’s brother. Sam and Harriet will be on Cape Cod by 1900 where he’ll have a photography studio. Harriet will be widowed there in 1920. Bill & Dora will be here in 1900.

 

RUFUS PUTNAM  New Ipswich, Hillsborough County

He is 53 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Mary Jane Ramsdell 48 NH MA NH, and children Daniel E. 16 NH and Alice L. 8 NH. He is number 2040, a son of Aaron Kimball Putnam and Nancy Wright, and was born in Wilton. He married Mary Jane May 5, 1861. They will be here till they die in the early 1900s.

 

EMILLE PUTNAM  Pelham, Hillsborough County

She is Emerilla Keyes ex-wife of Franklin Putnam. She married him here in 1841, but didn’t show in the 1850 or 1860. Franklin’s dad was Ezra Putnam (838) from Cavendish, Vermont. In 1870 she was here in Pelham with her father Jonas keys, and is now living with her sister Buelah Stiles. She lists herself as single, so must have divorced Franklin back in the 50s. Anyway, she is now 71 MA MA NH.

 

ANDREW J. (JACKSON) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 51 NH and is living with his wife Sarah F. Whitney 41 MI and children William A. 16 NH, Hattie L. 14 NH, Mabel L. 12 NH and Augusta W 7 NH. He is a son of Caleb Putnam (1886) and Sarah Jane Longley of Wilton. He was born here. They will be here in 1900 and by 1910 Sarah will be widowed and living with her daughter Augusta. Sarah Flagg Whitney is a daughter of Richard Harris Whitney and Nancy Flagg.

 

ARTEMAS PUTNAM  Weare, Hillsborough County

He is 49 NH NH NH, Mary Orinda Kidder 44 NH NH NH, Mary I. 22 NH, Fred B. 17 MA. Her father John B. Kidder 69 NH is with them. They were in Wilton up till now, and will be in Worcester County, Mass. in 1900. He is a son of Caleb Putnam from Wilton. He is a leather tanner.

He is 64 NH MA MA, and is living with his wife Hannah Edmunds 64 NH and Lillian H. Herbert 7 NH, a boarder. He will be here until he dies August 5, 1890.

He is now 76 VT NH NH, Dorcas (a Putnam too) is 69 NH NH NH. Been here forever.

 

ARTHUR H. (HERBERT) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 37 NH NH MA, Lucy 29 NH NH NH. They live with a Shattuck family. He is a son of Abiel Abbott Putnam and Mary Ann Radden from Wilton. Lucy is also a Putnam. She is a daughter of Peter Hamilton Putnam and Lavinia Lane of Wilton.  She was with her grandparents, Joseph & Lucy Putnam, in 1860, after her mom died in 1856.

 

ELIJAH PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 47 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Ann S. 37 NH VT NH, and daughters Laura M. 19 NH, Katie E. 16 NH and Nanette S. 5 NH. He is a son of Joseph Putnam and Sarah Shattuck from here in Wilton. Ann is a new wife. If you look at the 11 year gap between the last two kids, that was when Caroline Barnes died and when he married Ann in about 1873. He and Ann will be here in 1900.

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is now 57 NH NH MA, and his wife Anna Flora Hartshorn is 56 NH NH NH. Kids all gone now.

 

JOHN C. PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 20 MA NH NH, Gertrude Alice Nutting 20 NH NH NH. They were married March 31, 1880. He works in a tannery. He is a son of Artemas Putnam and Mary Kidder of Wilton. He was home here in 1870 and in Worcester County, Mass. in 1860 I think. Gertrude will have 3 kids before she dies in the mid 1890s, but only two will be here in 1900. John will marry Blanche Livingston in 1896 in Leominster and she will die in 1898. By 1900, he will be on his third wife Jessie Rice and they will be in Leominster, Massachusetts and in Phillipston by 1910.

 

LEVI PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

Aaron Kimball’s son is now 60 NH NH NH, Alicia Susanna Kendall, his second wife, 48 MA MA MA. Both will still be here in 1900.

 

PETER H. (HAMILTON) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a son of Joseph Putnam and Lucy Rumrill from Wilton. He is now 60 NH NH NH, Hannah Perkins his third wife is 61 NH NH NH. Her son from her first marriage, Horace Beard is 36 MA. He married Hannah here in 1862. He is still a furniture manufacturer and will be here till he dies in 1897. Hannah isn’t around for the 1900 either.

 

PHEBE S. PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

She is Phebe Jones, wife of Samuel Putnam who was a son of Eliphalet Putnam. She is 57 NH NH NH, her daughter Marta A. 33 NH and her mother Lucy Jones 77 NH. She has been with her folks since Sam died in the 1850s.

 

WARREN P. (PRESCPTT) PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is a blacksmith 35 NH NH NH, Helen Merritt is 36 MA MA MA. He is a son of Sewell and Hannah Putnam from here in Wilton. He will marry Helen Merritt in 1874 and be with her in 1900.

 

WILLIAM H. PUTNAM  Wilton, Hillsborough County

He is 27 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Ella H. 26 NH NH NH, children Clytie G. 3 NH, Henry H. 1 NH and Hattie L. 1/12 NH. They are all living with Henry N. Gray (probably Ella’s father). He is a son of Peter Putnam and Lavinia Lane. In 1860, he was with his grandparents, Joseph Putnam and Lucy Rumrill in Milford, Hillsborough County. He is widowed here in 1900.

 

ALONZO L. PUTNAM  Allenstown, Merrimack County

He is a stone cutter 57 NH NH NH, and lives with his sister Mary Jane Dennison 55 NH, her husband Harvey Dennison 55 NH and their daughters. Alonzo and Mary Jane are kids of James Putnam and Elizabeth Saltmarsh of Hookset. He was married to Leafy Woods and has been in Worcester County, Massachusetts since the 1840s. She died in the 1860s, and he came back up here in the 1870s.

He is 30 CAN CAN CAN. Also here is Josie Putnam 19 CAN CAN CAN. Both are listed as being single and they are in a boarding house.

 

ISABELL PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimack County

She is 37 ME ME ME, single, and a housekeeper for Robert and Lucinda Hall. She was here single in 1860. She is still single here in 1900. Must be another of Nehemiah’s kids.

 

LUCY PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimack County

She is 46 ME ME ME and has her daughter Emma 20 MA MA ME with her. She lists herself as being married.

 

MARIA F. PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimack County

She is a seamstress 49 ME ME ME. She is listed as single, and will still be here in 1900. She is Maria Foster Putnam a daughter of Nehemiah Putnam from Rumford, Maine. The family was shown here in 1850 and 1860 and she was here with her widowed mom in 1870. Ed Putnam found a picture taken of her. The inscription reads: “Marie F. Putnam was the only woman among 300 employees of the Abbot-Downing Co., makers of the famous Concord Stagecoaches. From 1865 to 1895, Putnam stitched leather for every stagecoach that rolled out of the Concord, New Hampshire factory—including those bought by Wells Fargo & Company.”

 

MARY A. PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimac County

She is 33 MA MA MA, a housekeeper for a Farwell family also from Mass. She is a daughter of Elisha Rockwood Putnam. The family was from Mass. then moved to Maine in the 1850s. They were there in 1860 and 1870, then the folks returned to Worcester County, Mass. in the 1870s and Mary Ann came over here.

 

SALLY PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimac County

She is Sarah Brown, the widow of David Putnam from here. David was a son of Timothy Putnam (1935) and Rachel Dascomb of Lyndeborough. She is 59 NH NH NH, Lizzie M. 24 NH, Emma F. 23 NH, and David H.(Herbert) 18 NH. Her sister Nancy A. Brown 53 NH is with her as she was in 1870. Sally and a couple of the kids will be here in 1900.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Concord, Merrimack County

He is 84 NH NH NH, a kit maker. He lives with George and Jennie Fuller. I would suspect the age is actually 34. He is most likely the William age 54 single here in 1900. If so, he is probably the son of Rufus and Lydia Putnam of Hopkinton.

 

FREDERICK PUTNAM  Franklin, Merrimack County

He is 19 NH NH NH and boarding with a Penslee family. Best guess is that he is the son of Timothy Thurston from Lyndeborough. His mom died, dad moved in with his son Edwin, and Fred probably headed here to find work. Just a guess.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimack County

He is 30 CAN CAN CAN, and is living with his wife Emma Harvey 42 NH, John H. 2 NH and John Harvey 74 NH, who is Emma’s father.

 

NANCY PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimack County

She 70 NH NH NH, and lives with Wentworth and Mary Wiggin.

 

WILLARD PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimac County

He is 52 MA CT MA, Sarah E. Stearns 51 MA MA MA. Also here is their daughter Alice 22 MN and her husband Curtis McCory 25 IN. He is a son of William Putnam and Sarah Briggs, and a brother of the next listed William. He was born November 5, 1827 in Sharon, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Stearns here in Hookset on January 1, 1847. They were here in the 1850 and then were in Rice County Minnesota from the late 1850s through the later 1870s. They have a son Willard who is still back in Minnesota and married now. Willard will die in Rockingham County New Hampshire August 23, 1899. Sarah is widowed in Rockingham in 1900 and in Manchester by 1910 at age 81. This is the ‘Other’ New England Putnam family from Yorkshire England that came to Connecticut in the mid 1700s.

 

WILLIAM H. PUTNAM  Hookset, Merrimack County

William Henry is one of the Yorkshire Putnams. He is now 57 MA NH MA, Lydia Jane Bryant 57 ME ME ME. Also here are their daughter Alice 24 NH and her husband Albert Sawyer 24 NH.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

He is 40 NH NH NH, Almira H. Eastman 40 NH NH NH, George M. 16 NH, and Grace E. 11 NH. They were here in 1870. He is a son of Martin Putnam from here and who died in 1845. Almira is widowed here in 1900 with her son George and daughter Grace. She is still with her then married daughter Grace in Boston in 1910 as well as back here with George..

 

JOSEPH E. (EPPS) PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

He is 36 NH and is living with his wife Margaret J. 33 NH and daughter Helen B. 2 NH. He is a son of Rufus Putnam Junior and Harriet Bailey of Hopkinton. They’ll be here in 1900.

 

RUFUS PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Merrimack County

Rufus Junior was here back in the 1850s. He is now 66 NH MA MA, Lydia C. Goss, his second wife, 49 NH NH NH. Their son Charles Rufus 16 NH is the only one still at home. By 1910, Lydia will be widowed and living with her son Charles and his wife Nancy.

 

SALLY PUTNAM  Newbury, Merrimack County

Sally Tenney is the widow of Benjamin Putnam (1948) and is now 86 NH MA MA. She lives with her daughter Emma K. Gillingham 51 NH and her husband Hiram Gillingham 57 NH. Sally was living with her son Addison in Wilmot in 1870. Also here are two of Addison’s daughters; Nellie G. 13 NH and Sadie (Sarah B.) 8 NH. Addison is presently in California working with his brother Samuel. I have no idea what happened to Addison’s wife Mary who was here in 1870, probably died in childbirth of Sarah. Addison was single when he went to California in 1874.

 

JOSHUA PUTNAM  Pembroke, Merrimack County

He is 46 NH NH NH, Ellen M. 47 NH NH NH, Stella C. 18 NH, James O. 14 NH (VT) and Edward (Edgar) M. 13 NH (VT). Took Rand Putnam to figure this one out. He is actually Orrin Putnam (maybe Joshua was his middle name, or just a ‘typo’), a son of Solon Putnam (2568) and Mary Ann Rice of Springfield, Vermont. He was there in 1850, in Claremont NH with Ellen in 1860, back in Springfield VT in 1870. They will all be in Manchester in 1900 and then Ellen will be widowed there in 1910.

 

AUGUSTUS R. (RANDALL) PUTNAM  Warner, Merrimack County

He is 44 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Eliza G. Rand 43 NH and sons George A. 18 NH and R. Herrick 7 NH. He is a son of Herrick Putnam and Rachel Kezar. In 1860 he was in Hopkinton with them, and in 1870 with his widowed mom here in Warner. He is the Depot Master for the railroad, and his son George works for him as well. George will be married in Northampton, Mass in 1900 and back here in Merrimack County by 1910.

Rachel Kezar is and has been a while, the widow of Herrick Putnam. She is 76 NH MA NH and now lives alone.

She is 8 NH and is living with her uncle Herman Gillingham.

 

CHURCH PUTNAM  Derry, Rockingham County

He is a teamster 19 MA MA MA and lives with William (no last name) 82 NH NH NH. I assume if they didn’t write the old guy’s last name they probably screwed up on the young one too.

 

GEORGE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Derry Depot, Rockingham County

He is 42 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Abby Hunt Partridge 32 MA and children George A. (Allen) 10 NH, Sarah J. (Josephine) 8 NH, John W. (William) 4 NH, Minnie M. (Maria) 1 NH and his mother Achsa Adkins Putnam is 81 NH. He is a son of John Putnam from Dunbarton, Merrimack County (in 1860), and in Fishersfield, Merrimac County before that. They were in Goffstown in 1870.

 

WARREN F. PUTNAM  Exiter, Rockingham County

He is 32 MA MA MA, a bank teller. He is a son of Lorenzo Perry Putnam. In 1870 he was at home in Lowell, Mass. In the 1900, he is a prisoner in the State Prison in Concord.

 

OLIVER PUTNAM  Hampstead, Rockingham County

He is 36 NH NH NH, Mary Emma Moores his wife is 30 NH NH NH. He is a farmer. He is a son of Henry Putnam. He was home here with his folks in 1870. He will die here October 6, 1897, and Mary with three kids will be here in 1900 and through 1920.

 

GEORGE T. D. PUTNAM  Plaistow, Rockingham County

He is now 40 NH VT NH and his wife Laura Sophia Carleton is 36 NH NH MA. They are living with her folks Hiram and Abigail Carleton. He is a shoemaker and is also listed in nearby Salem working at the factory. He is a son of Abraham Putnam and Clarissa Greeley of Manchester. He was home in 1860, and married here in 1870 also living with her folks then. He will die here April 1, 1881 and be buried in Plaistow. Laura will be widowed here in Plaistow in 1900.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Portsmouth, Rockingham County

He is still a paymaster for the Navy. He is 37 ME MA ME, Annie M. Salter his wife is 32 NH NH NH. They live with Mary Salter 73 NH who is probably her mother, but is not listed that way. He was single here in 1870 and listed as Edward Putnam 28 ME a paymaster. He is a son of Israel Putnam and Sarah Emery Frost of Bath, Maine. He was single, and listed both there and here in 1870. They will be at the Marine Barracks at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1900 and back here in Portsmouth in 1920.

 

GEORGE T. D. PUTNAM  Salem, Rockingham County

He is 38 NH NH VT and lives with George Simonds. Both are shoemakers. He is a son of Abraham Putnam and Clarissa Greeley of Manchester. He was home in 1860, and married here in 1870 to Laura Sophia Carleton. He is with Laura back in Plaistow now living with her folks Hiram and Abigail Carleton. He will die there April 1, 1881 and be buried in Plaistow, New Hampshire. Laura will be widowed in Plaistow in 1900.

He is 24 NH NH NH and a servant to Relief Neil 71 NH.

 

JANE PUTNAM  South Newmarket, Rockingham County

She is 52 Nova Scotia and is living with her daughter Harriet 26 NH, grandson John 9/12 NH, son in law Russell B. Smith 23 NH, Addie E. 21 NH and Lewis R. 2/12 NH.

 

ALBERT E. PUTNAM  Farmington, Strafford County

He is 34 MA MA MA, a shoe manufacturer, Abbie E. Wingate is 28 NH NH NH. He is a son of Orrin Putnam from Danvers. In 1870, he was living with his brother George. He married Abigail here in Farmington December 4, 1870. They will be here in 1900, and Abbie widowed here in 1920.

 

MARIANNA PUTNAM  Farmington, Strafford County

She is 36 NH NH NH, sons Ralph W. 14 NH MA NH, Herbert 10 NH MA NH, Willie 2/12 NH MA NH. She lists herself as widowed. She is Mary Ann Waldron, wife of George Franklin Putnam. George was a son of Orrin Putnam and Sally Nourse from Danvers, Mass. They were here in 1870. Now I don’t know what happened, she is not widowed at all, maybe a spat or something. Don’t know where George is now, but he is alive and kicking. They are all back together in Lynn, Massachusetts by 1900 and are there through 1920 as are the kids.

 

BENJAMIN W. (WILLARD) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is now 58 NH NH VT, Ann B. Hamlin 50 NH NH NH, Mary L. 19 NH, Willard A. 16 NH, Marcie H. 14 NH, Edwin J. 12 NH, Lucy N. 11 NH. Also here is Ann’s mother Mary Hamlin 81 NH. Only Willard shows up in 1900, so maybe the family got misplaced once again.

 

CATHERINE PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

She is 74 MA MA MA, and is living with her daughter Catherine J. Way 34 NH and her husband Alva Way 37. Also here is her granddaughter Jennie N. Putnam 22 NH VT NH, a daughter of her son Henry. Catherine Dinsmore is the widow of Oliver Putnam from here, and has been since the 1860s.

 

FRANK W. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 47 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Mary Rosette Putnam, a cousin, 45 NH and daughter Augusta R. 10 NH. Franklin is a son of Nathan P. Putnam and Nancy Grinell. He was born here, and they will all be here in 1900. He runs a country store here in town.

 

GEORGE I. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 20 NY NH CT. He is living with a Laboree family and is attending school. He is a son of Daniel and Elizabeth Putnam. He was home in Orange County NY in 1860. His dad died in 1869 and his mom is back in Ulster County NY where he was born. He is also listed in New York as being a cadet at the USMA at West Point, New York. His dad Daniel was number 1132, a son of Benjamin Putnam (452) and Sally Willard of Charlestown, NH. He married Elizabeth Jones in New Haven, Connecticut. His widow and family returned to Charlestown, New Hampshire, where she will die in 1891. George will marry Isabelle O’Neil in Charlestown in 1906 and they will be in San Diego, California in 1920.

 

JAMES S. (SOUTHARD) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is a son of Samuel Putnam and Eliza Southard. He is now 61 NH NH NH, Susan R. Dinsmore 53 NH NH NH, Susie 23 NH, and Frederick S. 16 NH. Only Fred will be around in 1900.

She is 21 TN NH – a dressmaker. She lives in a boardinghouse. See the 1870 listing. She was a daughter George Melville Putnam. She was born in Washington DC though. She’ll still be here, unmarried in 1920.

He is 63 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Mary Annette Minard 41 NH and children Aaron S. (Southard) 16 NH, Alice M. 14 NH and John L. (Leroy) 6 NH. He’s number 2593 a son of Samuel Putnam (1159) and Eliza Southard. They were shown here in Charlestown in 1870. Sam will be widowed here in 1900. The two sons will be here through the 1920.

 

WESLEY D. (DANIEL) PUTNAM  Charlestown, Sullivan County

He is 39 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Mary Jane Parks 38 NH, daughter Mary B. 15 NH and his wife’s niece Emma A. Willman 8 MA. He is a son of John Putnam and Valeria Antoinette Seaver. Born here. They will soon move to Boston where he will be a salesman. Mary Jane has been a schoolteacher and will become a physician when they are in Boston and will Practice there and after Wes dies in 1903, she will practice and teach medicine in Los Angeles until she is into her 90s in the 1930s.

He is 46 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Elvira Sartwell 45 NH and children Frank S. 24 NH, Emma S. 16 NH, Willie H. 15 NH, Ada M. 10 NH and Grace M. 7 NH. He was in Acworth in 1860 and Charlestown in 1870, a son of Oliver Putnam and Catherine Dinsmore. His full name is William Dinsmore Putnam.

 

ABIGAIL PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

She is 50 NH and lives with her sister Lydia Eastman 39 NH and her new husband Jackson Eastman. There are two kids with last name Foster who are Lydia’s by an earlier marriage. She is Abigail Wiley, ex-wife of Dexter Buckley Putnam. They were in Croydon in 1860, and living apart in 1870. She lists herself as widowed, but Dexter is still around with a new wife.

 

ESTHER PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is 71 NH MA MA, Lydia Kelley is 65 NH MA NH. John is a son of Solomon Putnam (1228), and was born in Croydon on May 2, 1809, and been in Claremont since the 1830s.

He is 40 NH and is living with his wife Eliza 34 NY and children John G. 17 NH, Stella H. 5 NH and William H. 3 NH. He is John G. Jr., his mom was Lydia Kelley. He was born here in Claremont. He’ll be here again in 1900.

He is 40 IRL (really Italy) and is living with his wife Ellen White 38 NH, Willie E. 12 NH, Mary B. 10 NH and Clarence 3 NH. They were in Acworth in 1870 and he was listed as being born in Italy then. He is here again, but widowed, in 1900. He will be married to Katie Lougee here in 1910.

 

PRESCOTT PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is 38 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Emma Cutting 31 NH and children Frank G. 7 NH, Annie L. 6 NH, Herbert W. 4 NH and Byron F. 2 NH. He is a son of John Grosvenor Putnam Sr. and Lydia Kelley of Claremont.

 

SOLOMON PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is still a horse dealer 51 NH VT VT, he is now married. J. Augusta is 35 VT VT VT. His uncle SAMUEL PUTNAM 82 NH NH NH is with him. Solomon is a son of Zelotes Putnam and Esther Richards. Samuel is Zelotes brother, and both are sons of Solomon Putnam and Miriam Elmer and were born here in Claremont.

 

SUMNER PUTNAM  Claremont, Sullivan County

He is now 76 MA MA MA and widowed. His daughter Ellen is 47 NH MA NH. There is also Lydia Griggs 77 NH MA MA living here. He’s been outa sight since 1860. Think he went through 3 wives and have no idea where he’s been for 20 years. Most likely here in 1870, but not recorded properly.

 

SAMUEL PUTNAM  Cornish, Sullivan County

He is 45 NH NH NH, and is living with his wife Antoinette Longcoy 37 OH, son Haldeman S. (Sumner) 9 OH, his mother Adeline L. 69 NH, aunt Sarah M. 77 NH and sister Lucy Ann 32 NH. He is a son of John Liscomb Putnam and Adeline Sumner. The above Sarah is his father’s sister, Lucy Ann is his sister. The family was in Cornish in 1860, but Sam was out in Portage County, Ohio at the time. Antoinette was born in Kent, Portage County, they were there in the 1870 census. The son Haldeman is named for his brother who was killed in the Civil War. Also the son, Haldeman will be in Springfield, Mass. in 1900 and 1920.

 

CALEB PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is a farmer 62 NH NH NH. Been here all his life. He was married to Joanna Badger in the 1860s, and she died in 1868. He’ll die here in 1881. He is number 2788, a son of Hiram Putnam and Rachel Barton. His son Hiram is presently in Barnard, Windsor County, Vermont.

 

EDDIE PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is 18 NH NH and works on Otis Cooper’s farm. He is a son of Charles Prescott Putnam who just died recently. He’ll be married in Goshen, Sullivan County in 1900.

 

ERVIN PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is 16 NH NH NH and works on Francis Dodge’s farm. He is another ‘displaced’ son of Charles Putnam.

 

FRED W. PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is 25 NH NH NH, His wife Mary E. Codman 23 NH and young Wilber F. 5/12 NH. They live with Mary’s folks Joshua and Ann Codman. He is a son of Marshall Putnam and Mary Matilda Carroll. He was at home in 1870.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is now 82 NH NH MA, and his second wife Mary Colby is 67 NH NH NH. He’s number 1235, a son of David Putnam.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

Number 2791, a son of Hiram and Rachel Putnam. He is 55 NH NH NH, Mary Matilda Carroll 50 NH NH NH, Frank 28 NH, Mary M. 20 NH, Nellie 11 NH. Marshall and Mary will be here in 1900. This is the line of Ed Putnam who has done and is doing so much genealogy work on all the various Putnams and Putmans.

He is 43 NH NH NH and is living with his wife Lucy Elizabeth Russell 31 NH, children Morris W. 4 NH, Fred O. 2 NH, Gertie M. 1 NH and a nephew John U. Emerson 10 NH. He is a son of Peter Putnam and Martha Winter. He was born here in Croydon.

He is number 1245, Caleb’s son. He is now 84 NH MA MA, Martha Winter 81 NH MA MA.

 

STILLMAN PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

He is now 44 NH NH NH, Caroline A. Cooper his wife is 37 NH NH NH, Freidel S. a son 20 NH. He is a son of Peter Putnam from here in Croydon. Caroline is widowed here in 1900

 

THANKFUL PUTNAM  Croydon, Sullivan County

She is the widow of Charles Prescott Putnam of Croydon who died in 1877. She is 47 NH and lives with her mother Sarah Ryder. The kids are spread out over a bunch of farms. She’ll be widowed here still in 1900.

 

FRED W. (WILBUR) PUTNAM  Hinsdale, Sullivan County

He is 25 NH and is living with Mary E. Codman 23 NH, Wilber F. 5/12 NH and Joshua A. Codman, probably her father. He is a son of Marshall Putnam and Matilda Carroll, and was born in Croydon, Sullivan County December 13, 1854. Mary will die, and he will marry Alice Forehand in Northampton, Mass. in 1890, and they will be in Chicago, Illinois by the 1900 census.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Lempster, Sullivan County

He is 49 NH and is living with his wife Sarah C. Graves 47 NH and children Cathie A. 13 NH, Oliver A. 9 NH and Charles G. 5 NH. He is a son of Oliver Putnam and Catherine Dinsmore, and was born in Charlestown. They’ll be here in 1900.

 

DEXTER B. (BUCKLEY) PUTNAM  Lempster, Sullivan County

He is 64 NH MA MA and is living with his wife Mary Beckwith 60 NH, daughter Emma L. 27 NH and granddaughter Ella E. 4/12 NH. Emma is his daughter, Ella would belong to his son George or Elmore, both of them not appearing in this census. He is number 2750, a son of Solomon Putnam and Rebecca Putnam Prescott. He was born in Croydon, Sullivan County. In 1850 and 1860 he was married to Abigail Wiley. They were divorced. In 1870 they were living separate lives, and he was married to Mary. Currently Abigail is in Claremont. Dexter will die here January 8, 1885 and Mary will die here June 21, 1890. In 1900, we find Abigail then 70 in the Claremont Cottage Hospital.

 

ASAHEL PUTNAM  Newport, Sullivan County

He is 62 NH NH NH and is living with his third wife Thankful F. Davis 42 NH and sons Fred A. 19 NH, Herman E. 12 NH and Morrison R. 3 NH and 1 boarder. He is a son of Samuel Putnam (466) and Ruth Spencer. He was born in Acworth.
